Determinant of Convulsions in Acute Infantile Hypernatraemia

or over), convulsions occurred early in therapy in 17. Other common causes of convulsions had been eliminated as far as possible. The incidence of convulsions was related to the degree of uraemia and acidaemia present on admission and not related to the sodium concentration. It is concluded that hypernatraemia, within the range studied, is not an important cause of infantile seizures unless other factors are operating. Elucidation of these other factors may be more profitable than study of the osmotic properties of the body fluids.

Effects of Infantile Repeated Hyperglycemia on Neuronal Density of Hippocampus and Pentylentetrazol Induced Convulsions in Male Wistar Rats
Objective(s) High blood glucose induces molecular, cellular, morphological and behavioral changes in the brain. Metabolic disturbances, contribute to the hippocampus injury and development of partial focal seizures. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of infantile repeated hyperglycemia on neuronal density of hippocampal CA3region in newborn Wistar male rats and its effect on ...
متن کاملOral rehydration in acute infantile diarrhoea with a glucose-polymer electrolyte solution.
Seven infants with mild acute diarrhoeal dehydration were rehydrated with an oral sugar-electrolyte solution containing a glucose polymer mixture. Six of them were rehydrated successfully. The high sodium content of the solution (90 mmol/l) was based on the WHO/UNICEF recommended glucose-electrolyte solution and was implicated as the cause of increases in serum sodium in 4 infants, one of whom ...
متن کامل'Lot's Wife' Syndrome in Acute Myeloid Leukaemia
Chronic hypodipsic hypernatraemia in the absence of clinical hypovolaemia, with normal renal function is rare, and has been reported principally in patients with known hypothalamic lesions.1'2 Hypernatraemia has been found in acute myeloid leukaemia, but only in association with diabetes insipidus.3 This appears to be the first reported case of chronic hypodipsic hypernatraemia complicating acu...
متن کاملThe PRRT2 mutation c.649dupC is the so far most frequent cause of benign familial infantile convulsions
PURPOSE Mutations in the PRRT2 gene have been recently described as a cause of paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia, infantile convulsions with choreoathetosis syndrome and, less often, infantile convulsions. We have analysed the frequency of PRRT2 mutations in families with benign familial infantile convulsions without paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia. METHODS AND RESULTS Direct sequencing of ...
متن کاملHypernatraemic dehydration and breast feeding: a population study.
As part of a population based regional review of all neonatal readmissions, the incidence of dehydration with hypernatraemia in exclusively breast fed infants was estimated. All readmissions to hospital in the first month of life during 1998 from a population of 32 015 live births were reviewed. Eight of 907 readmissions met the case definition, giving an incidence of at least 2.5 per 10 000 li...
